In June 2019, Shalini challenged her own biases and pre-conceived notions to join an African Impact NGO as a volunteer. She spent about a month in Livingstone, Zambia understanding the culture and needs of the local community. It was an experience that taught her something about herself. She discovered that she was not as averse to rural living as she thought herself to be before leaving Singapore. She enjoyed the deep connection with the students, teachers and volunteers with whom she had many conversations and interactions in the one month she was in Livingstone, Zambia.
